Construction is a high-risk activity. It involves working in exposed situations, often above ground level. Workers tend to concentrate on their own particular jobs without much regard to what other workers may be doing. The site itself is in a state of continual change and skills standard of workers, who are often subcontractors, are uneven. There is always a tendency for corner cutting at every opportunity, which, in turn, increases risk. Statistics show that 80% of all fatal accidents at work take place on construction sites and 70% of them are directly attributable to management errors, which are usually preventable.
This course has been designed to inculcate in participants safety consciousness and awareness of potential hazards at construction and excavation sites. Participants are also made aware of the range of measures necessary to prevent accidents. Special attention has also been given to demolition and excavation hazards.
• Construction hazards
• Roof work
• Scaffolding safety
• Safe use of ropes, wires, chains and lifting tackle
• Sling system
On completion of the course, participants will be able to do the following:
• Outline systems to prevent workers from falling from heights.
• List some of the important checks when inspecting and using ladders.
• Emphasise important points related to scaffolding safety.
• Understand main precautions to be taken during demolition and excavation.
The course will benefit safety officers, supervisors and people directly in charge of construction, excavation and demolition sites.
