Communicating effectively is a skill and like any other skills, it is something that can be learned and improved with practice.
A great deal of what goes on in a workplace is influenced by how well workers communicate with each other. Workers' ability to perform their jobs correctly and their general attitude about the importance of health and safety are determined, to a large extent, by the messages they get from their supervisors.
This module provides some basic guidelines to improve spoken communication between supervisors and their staff. The example supervisors set through their own behavior, and in particular, the way they manage health and safety also affect their colleagues' work habits. These unspoken messages let workers know the importance their supervisors place on working safely.
Training methodology consists of a combination of stimulating lectures, demonstrations, films, individual and group exercises, and group discussions.
Assessment is by means of a short objective test consisting of 30 multiple-choice questions. Participants need to be able to communicate in English.
After completing the module, participants will be able to do the following:
• Ensure that they and their staff understand each other's spoken messages correctly.
• Recognise the effect their actions have on the employees' behaviour and the amount of attention employees pay to health, safety, and environmental protection.
• Develop and maintain an environment that encourages employees to maintain good communication and freely articulate problems in the work area.
